Welcome 1/22
Welcome to our course blog. Class discussion will take place here. I will either start a string or ask one of you to start a string. Please include the date in your title. This is the first time I have used a blogger blog. If you have suggestions on how to best use this technology or improvements please speak up!

CAUTION!! Be sure you set up a "Google/Blogger" account FIRST before you try to post anything, because if you don't and try to set up an account after typing your comment, it will all vanish into the aether! I had to learn this the hard way. Now that I am all signed up, I will re-enter my last post, if I can remember....
My Ecological Footprint is Smaller than My Actual Footprint....But that's Not Necessarily a Good Thing, Is It?
Well, I'm going to jump in with both (size 8-1/2) feet here and post under the "Welcome" thread, because I can't quite see any other place to put the results of the assignment to measure our ecological footprint. Since you asked for suggestions, I would suggest that students be allowed to start or respond to threads under the discussion board. Right now, that does not seem possible. So although this comment may be out of place in this blog, here are the results of my ecological footprint measurements:
1. Infrequently
2. 1/4
3. Much less
4. 2 pp
5. 500-1000 sq ft
6. Free-standing house w/running water
7. Yes, w/energy conservation & efficiency
8. 0 (ther are no buses, trains, subways or ferries in Mendocino)
9. 0
10. 10-100 mi
11. Sometimes
12. 3 hrs
13. More than 50
14. Occasionally
Total footprint: 8
(compared to 24/person in the US)
Food: 2.5
Mobility: 0.2
Shelter: 3.2
Goods/Services: 2.5
So even though my score is less than my shoe size, we would still need a couple of earths if everyone were like me. And here I thought I was doing so well! Perhaps my score would have been lower if I lived in a city with mass transit so I didn't have to own a car, but unfortunately in Mendocino, that's not possible...
