"So what does this have to do with the class?"
The only connection I can think of is OIL, one of our planet's dwindling, nonrenewable resources. In February, Venezuela's president Chavez threatened to cut off the supply of oil to the US, which currently imports 1.4 million barrels of oil PER DAY from Venezuela. So now in March, the US refuses to extradite Posada, a known Venezuelan terrorist, apparently retaining jurisdiction over him as some kind of "bargaining chip." (I can just hear Bush shouting, Take That, Chavez!) My only thought about keeping Posada safe and sound and on the loose here in America is, whatever happened to taking harsh measures against countries that harbor known terrorists? How hypocritical is that?
Oh, on the subject of oil, I read that ExxonMobil posted $40.6 billion profits last quarter. http://www.cnn.com/2008/BUSINESS/02/01/exxon.profits.ap/index.html
Whenever I see "Iran-Contra" and the first Bush president, I think Neo- Conservatives. I am late in posting because I have been looking everywhere for my archive of material on this subject. Oil YES. Absolutely, June. But also an emphasis on "New World Order," aka "Globalization." Which includes such dubious concepts as "perpetual war" and so many other economic experiments. I will post again on this topic when I find some of my articles.
It turns out my point is too convoluted for the confines of this blog, so I will confine my comments to how this article is related to the class. Posada is connected in various ways to the Reagan administration and the Iran-Contra fiasco. Through that administration and that of George H.W. Bush, I feel many favors must have been performed in the advancement of what was then called the “New World Order.” Yes, as stated in June’s post, oil plays a major role, but so doesn’t deregulation of environmental concerns, NAFTA, CAFTA, and innumerous other strange and villainous machinations. To protect this man by allowing him to reside in Florida (another dubious connection of grand proportions – i.e., airports, drug running, etc.), anyone who delves into grand conspiracy theories as I, for recreational purposes, sometimes do, would question Posada’s roles in many causes all aimed at the ultimate globalization of the planet… which isn’t good for people or the environment. Of course that’s just my opinion, and I could be wrong.
Posada is a Cuban-born terrorist and long-time CIA agent who boasted of helping to detonate deadly bombs in Havana hotels 10 years ago, and was the alleged mastermind of a 1976 bombing of a civilian Cuban airplane that killed 73 people.
The release of Posada shows the hypocrisy of the Bush administration, which incessantly touts its 'war on terror.' The U.S. government has also violated three treaties that require it to extradite Posada to Venezuela for trial or try him in U.S. courts for offenses committed abroad.
This is another example of our government’s obvious disregard of international treaties. What is good for the goose SHOULD be good for the gander. But Bush’s administration again is selectively choosing which laws and treaties to abide by.
