Scary article, isn't it? I was not aware that melting Arctic ice does not raise sea levels. I can see how it does contribute to global warming because dark water absorbs the sun's heat, instead of having the white ice reflect it back.

Not sure what kind of response to post to this thread, other than, Oh no, one more thing we humans are doing to destroy our nest.

To me it reinforces the fact that the time to act is NOW! The challenge is of course where to start? The answer is anywhere and everywhere. The first place to start is with ourselves and by healing our relationship with mother earth. Just deciding that we are going to be a part of the generation that starts LOVING and giving back to her is liberating and energizing. We can be reassured that others will make the effort if we can.

If these articles are reaching main stream media my guess is that there are probably quite a few people wishing they knew what to do about it. The connection needs to be made between the organizations struggling to address issues and the people clueless to know where to begin. Any ideas how that might be achieved?

Any ideas? Heck yeah. Our government is spending billions of dollars on a war against "terror" which cannot be won (like any other nebulous war, for instance the war on drugs and the war on crime). We could take even a small fraction of that defense/military budget and help these struggling organizations to get the word out to all the clueless people and organize them into action that can help save our environment. It would be money very well spent. However, the chances of it happening anytime in the near future are nil, in my opinion. Imagine an American administration that devoted billions of dollars a year on education, remediation, and rejuvenation of our environment instead of militarization, devastation, and destruction of other countries.

Reading Technology, Markets and Overshoot and watching Who's Counting made me realize how screwed up our economics truly are. Our priorities are skewed. Like Marilyn Waring pointed out, we could take the amount the US government spends on military weapons in ONE DAY and be able to provide clean water to every person in the entire world. If we could use that kind of spending power to help the environment and alleviate the suffering of the poor, now that would really be something for the main stream media to report, wouldn't it?
